The most recent trade statistics published by the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that exports of aluminum scrap recorded decline during the entire year 2019. The total exports were valued at $2.19 billion during the previous year, significantly down by almost 12% when matched with the exports of $2.47 billion million in 2018.
The primary importer of aluminum scrap from the U.S. was China. The value of exports to China totalled $350.83 million, despite the trade volumes witnessing 51% year-on-year decline. In second place was South Korea, whose imports from the U.S. were valued at $324.19 million. The South Korean imports registered almost 5% year-on-year dip. The third largest export destination was India, whose imports from the U.S. totalled $322.46 million. The other key export markets were Malaysia ($295.39 million) and Mexico ($165.67 million).
The U.S. imported $791.91 million worth of aluminum scrap during the previous year. This compares with $1.09 billion during 2018, suggesting a decline of more than 27% year-on-year. The top five sources of import were Canada ($520.73 million), Mexico ($212.84 million), Guatemala ($12.11 million), the UK ($5.62 million) and Chile ($5.02 million).
