The steel production statistics published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) suggests nearly 6% surge in output by Asian region during the previous year. This is despite huge production declines reported by Pakistan and Thailand.
The Asian crude steel production totalled 1.328 billion tonnes in 2019, higher by 5.9% when compared with the production of 1.254 billion tonnes in the prior year. The Chinese crude steel output totalled 996.342 Mt, recording a surge of 8.3% over the previous year. The country accounted for more than 75% of the total regional yearly production. India continued to remain as the second largest producer in the region, with an output totalling 111.246 Mt, slightly higher by 1.8% when matched with the previous year. In third place was Japan with yearly output of 99.284 Mt.
Among all countries in the region, Pakistan and Thailand reported notable year-on-year decline in steel production. Thailand saw its output fall by 34.6%, whereas Pakistan recorded 29.8% decline in 2019 output. The Asian crude steel production totalled 111.047 Mt during Dec ‘19. The leading producers during the month were China (84.265 Mt), India (9.281 Mt), Japan (7.784 Mt), South Korea (5.876 Mt) and Taiwan (1.740 Mt).
