The Workhorse of Rough Size Reduction: Dual Shaft Shredders
When dealing with massive, abrasive, or tangled materials, single-rotor machines equipped with sizing screens quickly overheat or choke. The dual shaft shredder machine (two-shaft shredder) serves as the primary processing benchmark for unseparated bulk scrap, running at low rotational speeds (12 to 35 RPM) with exceptionally high hydraulic or electromechanical cutting torque.
The Mechanics of Counter-Rotating Hook Discs
The operational core of a two-shaft machine consists of two parallel shafts fitted with interlocking, hook-shaped blade discs:
Inward Draw Action: Both shafts rotate inward toward the center, acting as a massive set of slow-speed industrial shears. The hooked blade tips puncture the incoming feedstock and pull it downward into the cutting zone.
Lateral Shear Force: Material is sliced along the razor-thin clearance between interlocking blade faces, while the hook profile tears the bulk scrap longitudinally into coarse strips.
Cleaning Combs (Scrapers): Stationary scraper plates sit between each blade disc, clearing packed fibrous materials, plastics, or wire out of the rotating blade gaps to maintain cutting efficiency.
Screenless Processing: The Secret to High Throughput
Unlike granulators or single-shaft shredders, standard dual-shaft shredders do not contain a sizing screen underneath the cutting bed. Material simply passes through the counter-rotating knives and discharges immediately once sheared.
This screenless engineering ensures continuous operation without the risk of plastic melting against a screen or elastic tires clogging holes. The resulting particle width is strictly determined by blade thickness (typically 20 mm to 75 mm), while the length varies based on the number of hooks per blade and the structural flexibility of the material.
Auto-Reverse Overload Safety Integration
When an unyielding chunk of structural steel, solid billet, or dense concrete enters the cutting chamber, the electric current (amperage) spikes rapidly. The automated Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) instantly reverses shaft rotation for several revolutions to reposition the blockage before resuming forward shear. If the blockage persists after three automated attempts, the shredder safely halts and trips an alert, protecting gearboxes and drive motors from catastrophic structural failure.
